Call of the Wild

Words By Blake

Each year in the fall, the forest echoes with elk calls as males bugle to attract females and intimidate other bulls. The best place to experience this natural spectacle is in the great vastness of Yellowstone National Park, often referred to as the Serengeti of North America, where one has the incredible opportunity to observe the largest bull elk up close in their natural habitat. While hiking on a crisp fall morning along the Madison River, I watched in awe as this powerful bull proudly led his cows past me, stopping just to raise his head toward the sky and let out a resounding call nearly in my face—an awe-inspiring screeching, bone-chilling, and unmistakable call of the wild that echoed across the landscape. He then hurried his harem away and disappeared into the dense woods, leaving me standing alone beside the river to contemplate this incredible encounter.

Yellowstone is a stunning and remarkable place that consistently draws me back time and time again, year after year. It can be a very challenging location to capture great photographs, but when those rare opportunities present themselves, it is always wild, rugged, and raw. The greatest moments here are fleeting and one must spend a lot of time to be faced with the perfect moment. Artistically, there is still so much more I hope to accomplish here. There’s no place like it, offering such an array of great animals with the backdrop of misty thermal features, towering pines and expansive, great valleys that stretch endlessly before the viewer.

Photographing Elk During the Fall Rut in Yellowstone

Photographing bull elk during the fall rut in Yellowstone National Park requires patience, awareness, and respect for distance. During this short window each year, dominant bulls aggressively defend their harems, bugling loudly to assert control and warn off rivals. These encounters are unpredictable and often fleeting, unfolding in seconds before the animals move back into forest cover or across open valleys.

This moment occurred along the banks of the Madison River, a corridor frequently traveled by elk during the autumn migration. Being present during peak rut activity meant long mornings in cold conditions, moving slowly and allowing wildlife behavior to dictate every decision. Experiences like this cannot be staged or repeated — they happen only when preparation meets opportunity in the wild.

Understanding Elk Bugling and Rut Behavior

Each fall, bull elk enter the rut — a brief, intense breeding season marked by aggressive displays and powerful vocalizations known as bugling. These calls serve two purposes: attracting cows and warning rival bulls to stay away. A mature bull’s bugle is loud, unpredictable, and often delivered at close range as dominance is asserted and harems are moved through forest corridors and river valleys.

During this period, elk behavior can change in seconds. Bulls that appear calm may suddenly charge, vocalize, or reposition their herd. Photographing elk during the rut requires patience, distance awareness, and a deep respect for how quickly these encounters can unfold in the wild.

About Call of the Wild Photograph

Call of the Wild captures a fleeting moment during the peak of the fall rut, when a dominant bull elk stopped along the Madison River and bugled from close range before moving his harem back into the timber. The image is defined by proximity, sound, and raw presence, a split second where instinct, power, and environment aligned.

This photograph was created in Yellowstone National Park, a place where wildlife encounters remain untamed and unscripted. Moments like this cannot be planned or repeated; they occur only when time in the field meets opportunity. Call of the Wild is released as a limited edition of only 95 fine art prints.

From the Field to Fine Art Print

Transforming a moment like this into a finished fine art print begins long before the shutter is released. It requires years of returning to the same landscapes, understanding animal behavior, and being present for countless days when nothing happens at all.

Once captured, each image is carefully refined to preserve realism, detail, and scale — honoring the experience as it occurred in the field. The final print is not just a photograph of an elk, but a permanent record of a wild, unrepeatable encounter.
