Words By Blake
As a child I spent many great summer days camping with my family at Convict Lake. I learned how to fish in its pristine waters and enjoyed the cool nights huddled by the campfire making s’mores. Looking back I retained many wonderful memories here during my most formidable years. Now as an adult, I’ve found that I focus much of my artistic energy on the places which most impacted that younger me. Although Convict Lake for me has turned out to be one of the hardest places to try to capture and walk away with an image that I feel is a great one. Spectacular lighting is hard to achieve here with the lake being tucked so deeply into a valley between the high mountains. To really capture the essence of this place I set out with my camera whenever I could get a calm morning. I tried many times over the years until I finally achieved my vision of the perfect light. There’s something so special about sitting here at the edge of the lake in solitude and stillness at the moment the rising sun first hits the mountain tops. A slow morning enjoying the early tranquility of the lake while all the campers and fishermen are still having their morning coffee. A peaceful start to a perfect day in the Sierra.
