My Story of Convict Lake

Silence

Blake hiked out to Convict Lake at sunrise during the first winter storm, following fresh bear tracks through new snowfall along the trail. Snow clung to the aspens as first light reached the granite walls above the lake, which lay perfectly still beneath the early winter calm.

My Story of Convict Lake

As a child, I spent many unforgettable summer days camping with my family at Convict Lake. I learned how to fish in its pristine, alpine-clear waters and enjoyed the cool Sierra evenings huddled by the campfire, making s’mores under the stars. Looking back, it’s easy to see how those early days—surrounded by mountains, stillness, and simplicity—shaped much of my connection to the outdoors. Convict Lake became a backdrop to some of my most formative years.

Now, as an adult and artist, I’ve noticed how often my creative energy gravitates back to the places that made the strongest imprint on my younger self. Naturally, Convict Lake is one of those places. But photographically, it’s also one of the most challenging subjects I’ve ever pursued. Tucked deep within a narrow glacial valley, Convict Lake doesn’t always offer the dramatic light that landscape photographers chase. The best moments are fleeting—soft sunrises reflected in calm water, or fall afternoons when color, light, and weather collide for just a few minutes at a time.

Over the years, I’ve returned to Convict Lake time and again, often leaving without a single image that felt worthy of the place. Still, I kept trying—waking early for those rare calm mornings, returning in storms, and studying the shifting light through every season. Slowly, I began to understand the valley’s subtle moods and elusive beauty. The result is a carefully curated collection, with one image from each season: fall’s vibrant color, winter’s frozen stillness, spring’s renewal, and the warmth of summer.

Every time I visit, I feel like that kid again—wandering the shoreline with a fishing rod, or watching storms roll across the water. This place is etched into who I am. Maybe that’s why I’ve been so hard on myself when photographing it. It matters more. And in this particular image, I believe I’ve finally captured both its quiet magic and the deep personal connection I’ve always felt here.
