Patagonia, Chile, 2018
I’ve spent years of my life in the mountains of Patagonia searching for, tracking and photographing one of the world’s most elusive cats. What began as a pursuit became an obsession, and over countless days in the field I was fortunate to spend extraordinary amounts of time in the presence of wild pumas.
Simply seeing a puma in the wild is an experience few people will ever have. But even after all that time with them, the opportunity to create an intimate portrait like this is still incredibly rare.
I had been with this mother and her cubs for days, watching them travel and hunt through the mountains. She became comfortable with my presence, one afternoon settling down just feet from me to rest as her cubs played nearby. She knew I was there, but she was completely at ease.
I sat quietly with her and waited as the warm afternoon sunlight lit the side of her face. Between moments of rest, we made eye contact.
One of the world’s most elusive cats had allowed me into her secret life, revealing a rare moment of calm and trust in an animal defined by its quiet power.
