At the time, I was deeply immersed in the world of professional surf photography, assisting legendary surf photographer Aaron Chang. He was not only my mentor but also a massive influence on my development as an artist. That summer in 2015, we frequently traveled to the Wedge whenever powerful south swells hit the California coast. It was an El Niño year, bringing a steady stream of strong storms and back-to-back epic waves.
On days like this, people came from all over to witness the sheer power of the ocean—massive waves crashing onto the shore and fearless surfers pushing their limits. The Wedge, known for its unique ability to amplify swells, would transform as waves collided with the jetty, doubling in size before violently breaking onto the steep, sandy beach. Standing on the shore, you could feel the ground shake with each impact.
This image captures the essence of that raw power—a perfect portrait of one of the most dangerous and mesmerizing waves in Southern California.
