Torres Del Paine, Patagonia Chile, 2016
Patagonia was the first place I ever traveled outside of the United States. After flying into southern Chile, I set out immediately on the 85-mile Circuit Trek around Torres del Paine.
Along the way, I found camaraderie with hikers from around the world. For eight days we shared the same trail, the same camps, and the same storms, seeing the same familiar faces each night. By the end, it felt as though we had all been on the same pilgrimage.
Most hikers visit the base of the Torres once during the trek. I hiked there on day one, and then again on day eight as we completed the circuit, coming full circle. I simply couldn't stay away.
Long before sunrise on that final morning, I climbed through the darkness toward the towers. I sat above the rocky glacial moraine in the rain while wind swept down from the mountains. I was in disbelief when the sun finally broke through and for a brief moment a rainbow appeared over the towers.
It was one of the most important moments of my photographic career and a photo I cherish to this day. It proved to me that I was right where I needed to be, chasing those fleeting moments I dream about as a photographer.
When the trek ended, everyone I had met along that journey continued on to other places across South America.
I stayed right there.
I watched the familiar faces from the circuit disappear. New hikers arrived each week, completed the same pilgrimage through the mountains, and moved on with their travels.
I couldn't leave. For the first time in my life, I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be. For the next 6 months and then years after thats where I stayed. Patagonia taught me how to see as a photographer. Its wild weather, dramatic light, and vast landscapes taught me patience, persistence, and how to seek out and recognize those rare moments when everything comes together. Patagonia shaped my photography, but more than that, it changed the course of my life.
