Falkland Islands, 2019

After years of photographing throughout Patagonia, I became fascinated by a remote archipelago in the South Atlantic known as the Falkland Islands. In 2019, I finally made the journey alone, carrying everything I would need to live beside a king penguin colony for two weeks. Completely self-sufficient, all of my food, water, camping gear, fuel canisters, solar panels, and camera equipment had to be packed into duffel bags and dropped with me on the coast.

With stormy weather limiting my ability to recharge batteries, every bit of available power was reserved for my cameras. Nights were spent in darkness, listening to the wind sweep across the beaches and the distant calls of thousands of penguins beyond my tent. Once I was dropped off, I saw no one.

Each day I watched endless lines of king penguins move between the colony and the sea, crossing the beach in great numbers. Through relentless wind, rain, and isolation, I returned to the shoreline again and again to witness one of the greatest wildlife spectacles I have ever experienced.

Alone on the island, surrounded by wildlife and ocean in every direction, I experienced a level of solitude that was just incredible. Lying on my belly in the sand, I created this image these king penguins returned from the sea in perfect formation.
