Mono Lake, California, 2026

My wife Alejandra, and I were meeting with Ronda Kauk at Mono Lake when we encountered the last wild stallion left at the lake. He had outrun the helicopters, but his family band didn’t make it. Since the roundup, he has been alone, still searching for them, with none like him around.

Ronda, a member of the Mono Lake Kootzaduka’a Tribe, told us that in her Native tradition, rain comes after a traumatic event to cleanse the land of grief, impurities, and malevolent forces. As we sat beside the spring with the stallion, thunder rolled in and lightning began to strike the landscape all around us. Then torrential rain and hail dropped down on us. The stallion stood exposed beneath the storm, hail hitting his back, no where to hide and no family left to protect. The stallion was grieving, and we took the moment to grieve there with him.

I love this place, but there is a void at Mono Lake now. Maybe visitors will feel it too, without being able to name what is missing. Those who never witnessed wild horses running free here may never fully understand, and the people who did this are simply unable or unwilling to comprehend what they have done to these deeply emotional and intelligent beings. Though the rain came to cleanse the land, the stallion still stands alone.
