Peru, 2018
I spent several weeks living in Peru's Sacred Valley, making it my base while exploring remote villages, ancient trails, and forgotten corners of the Andes. During that time, I noticed Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, marked high on a ridgeline overlooking the valley below. The moment I saw it on the map, I knew I had to make the journey.
Setting out alone, I spent the day climbing through the high desert mountains of the Andes toward the ancient gateway nearly 13,000 feet above sea level. Along the way, reminders of the Inca civilization seemed to appear everywhere. Ancient stonework, agricultural terraces, and centuries-old trails wound through the mountains beneath towering peaks hidden in the clouds.
As evening approached, I sat quietly at the Sun Gate overlooking the Sacred Valley. To help manage the elevation, I chewed coca leaves and, following the advice of a local who learned I would be visiting the site, left an offering of my three finest leaves to Pachamama. This tradition of gifting is still practiced throughout the Andes as a gesture of gratitude and respect. As the clouds briefly parted, only small glimpses of the mysterious peaks beyond became visible. I made this photograph from the trail leading into the ancient site.
Long after sunset, I began the hike back alone beneath the stars. By the beam of my headlamp, the mountains came alive with creatures hidden during the day, and somewhere along the trail I crossed paths with a puma moving silently through the darkness. It was a fitting end to a journey that felt less like a hike and more like a pilgrimage into the heart of the Andes.
