Canyonlands, Utah, 2019
I created this photograph while passing through Utah during a climbing trip. I had heard about an arch that became illuminated from underneath by the first rays of morning sunlight, and since I was nearby, I knew I had to see it for myself.
Long before dawn, I hiked through the darkness to the arch for the very first time and found a place to wait for sunrise.
As morning approached, before the sun had even appeared above the horizon, the clouds overhead began to catch the first light of day and the underside of the arch started to glow a deep red.
For a few brief moments, the sandstone radiated from within against a backdrop of ancient canyons and valleys stretching across the desert below.
It was unlike anything I had seen before.
