Death Valley, California, 2026
Following an intense windstorm, I spent the entire night wandering the dunes of Death Valley beneath a sky full of stars.
Hour after hour, I climbed ridge after ridge through the darkness, watching the desert constantly reshape itself in the wind. By dawn, I had made my way to the summit of the tallest dune I could find and settled in to wait for the first light of day.
As the sun rose above the mountains, the relentless winds carried sand off of the crest of the dune and into the air, transforming the morning light into a glowing veil of gold. For a few brief moments, the desert seemed to come alive as the sunlight, wind, and sand combined into a scene unlike anything I had witnessed before.
It was one of those rare moments when everything had come together.
