Falkland Islands, 2019
After years of photographing throughout Patagonia, I became fascinated by a remote archipelago in the South Atlantic known as the Falkland Islands. I finally made the journey alone, carrying everything I would need to live beside a king penguin colony for two weeks. Completely self-sufficient, all of my food, water, camping gear, fuel canisters, solar panels, and camera equipment had to be packed into duffel bags and dropped with me on the coast.
Days were spent wandering the beaches and observing the rhythms of the colony. Thousands of king penguins moved between the sea and shore, filling the landscape with constant activity. Yet among the crowds, it was often the quieter moments that captured my attention.
One evening as twilight settled across the South Atlantic, these two penguins paused along the shoreline while storm clouds gathered offshore. For a brief moment, the chaos of the colony disappeared and the scene became one of simplicity, balance, and connection. Living alone among the penguins for weeks allowed me to witness moments like this that most visitors never see. This photograph remains one of my favorite memories from the Falkland Islands.
