Falkland Islands, 2019

After leaving my first remote camp photographing king penguins elsewhere in the Falkland Islands, I continued deeper into the archipelago toward one of its most isolated corners. Reaching the island required a series of endless takeoffs and landings from the co-pilot's seat of a small twin-engine aircraft as we island-hopped across the archipelago, delivering mail and supplies to scattered settlements along the way. Eventually, I was dropped on a remote grassy headland with my gear, a tent, and enough supplies to live alone for the next week. My only connection to the outside world was a radio used to arrange my flight off the island, and getting a signal meant climbing high towards the island's highest point.

My camp sat beneath a rocky overhang overlooking the ocean. Each day began and ended with long walks along the beaches and windswept hills surrounding the island, observing endless wildlife ranging from penguin, cormorant, and albatross colonies to massive elephant seals hauled out along the shore. At times, playful Commerson’s dolphins would surf the waves around me, weaving through the shallow water just a few feet away.

One afternoon I climbed the coastal bluffs above a colony of rockhopper penguins overlooking a breathtaking stretch of coastline. Frigid turquoise water, white sand beaches, and countless islands stretched across the horizon in every direction while thousands of penguins gathered throughout the island's endless colonies. Standing there alone, surrounded by wildlife and ocean in every direction, it felt as though I had reached the edge of the world.
