Yellowstone, 2023
Revenant is a special color edition of one of my most sought-after wildlife photographs, 28 Below.
Made on the coldest morning of the year in Yellowstone National Park, this massive bull bison emerged from the steam of a thermal spring as temperatures plunged to twenty-eight below zero. Frost clung to his coat while warm mist drifted through the frozen air, revealing a moment that could have belonged to another time.
While 28 Below was released as a black and white, I felt this moment deserved to be shared in color as well. The cool blues of the winter morning, warm tones from the first rays of the sun of the and intricate frost frozen to every strand of fur reveal a different side of the encounter. Standing in the rising steam, he seemed emerge from another moment.
For me, this image has always felt timeless. Standing in the mist, the great bull appeared almost prehistoric, as though he had stepped forward from another age. The title Revenant reflects that feeling, a survivor returning from the distant past, a living reminder of the wild American West.
