Mono Lake, California, 2022
For a brief period, the eastern shore of Mono Lake was home to over 700 wild horses. Favorable summers, abundant seasonal grass, and a series of mild winters allowed the population to flourish, creating the largest concentration of wild horses I have ever witnessed.
I spent much of that season camping along the remote east side of the lake, exploring the most isolated corners of the basin where the horses roamed across vast sagebrush valleys and volcanic hills. Despite the immense size of the herd, the vast landscape they occupied and the difficulty of accessing the region made them a true needle in a haystack. Often, they would disappear into the mountains as quickly as they were spotted.
Driven by a determination to document them, I spent countless days searching the Mono Basin. In all that time, I never encountered another person. Looking back, I believe I witnessed one of the great untold wildlife spectacles of the American West. For a brief moment in time, hundreds of wild horses roamed this vast and remote landscape, largely unseen beneath the Sierra Nevada.
For me, seeing these horses along the ancient waters of Mono Lake beneath the snow-covered summits of the Sierra Nevada was one of the highlights of my life. The following winter would prove to be brutal. Record snowfall buried the basin, dispersing the herd and taking a devastating toll on the population. When spring finally arrived, I witnessed the aftermath of that harsh winter and quickly realized that a shocking majority of the herd had perished.
This photograph serves as a tribute to that remarkable herd and a fleeting chapter in the history of Mono Lake that has largely passed into memory.
