Words by Blake
During my 2018 sailing journey through the San Blas Islands, I was drawn to the vibrant spirit of the Kuna people and their rich tradition of weaving. One afternoon, I encountered a young Kuna girl walking onto an old dock that stretches into the sea, the sun fading behind her. She paused, looked out to the water, and stood still long enough for me to ask permission to photograph her.
Without a word, she nodded. I captured the moment instinctively. There was a stillness and presence, a connection in her gaze that felt timeless. No props, no posing—just her and the horizon. It was one of the most powerful cultural portraits I’ve ever made.
