Yellowstone, Wyoming, 2021
I've always loved Yellowstone, and to me, no place captures the essence of the park quite like Grand Prismatic Spring.
Whenever I'm in Yellowstone, I find myself imagining what it must have been like for the first people to encounter this place. Traveling through endless dark forests, surrounded by predators and wildlife, enduring bitter winters and long, dreary days. Yellowstone must have been a beautiful but unforgiving place. I can only imagine what it would have felt like to emerge from those forests and discover something like Grand Prismatic Spring. The brilliant colors, the boiling water, the steam rising from the earth. It must have seemed otherworldly.
On one visit, I was walking along the boardwalk, surrounded by fumes of rising steam, when I stopped to make this photograph. What caught my attention was the way the colors and textures seemed to emerge from the mist, revealing just enough of the spring while leaving the rest to the imagination.
Even after all my visits to Yellowstone, Grand Prismatic still leaves me with that same sense of wonder.
