Colorado, 2019
I went looking for fall color and found a hillside that seemed to have every shade at once.
The colors were late that season, so I left my usual spots and traveled to the farthest corners of Colorado in search of something new. Much of the state had barely begun to change. Then, by chance, I came upon this hillside: red foliage and dark pines rising behind aspens in shades of green, yellow, and orange.
It was one of the most colorful scenes I’ve ever witnessed in nature. There’s so much happening in the photograph that you can get lost in it, finding a new detail each time you look. It was exactly the kind of surprise I hope to come home with after a trip to see the fall colors.
