Death Valley, California, 2026
Following one of the strongest windstorms Death Valley had experienced in decades, my wife Alejandra and I found ourselves standing among a landscape that had been completely reshaped by the desert beneath a sky full of stars.
We had come with a very specific vision. I wanted to create an image from beneath a dune looking straight upward toward the heavens, something I had never really seen photographed before. After midnight, the lingering sandstorm finally began to clear, and we set out into the dunes beneath a sky full of stars.
For hours we climbed higher and higher dunes, battling wind and sand as we searched for the perfect ridgeline. My wife followed me through the darkness and discomfort as we moved from dune to dune by flashlight. None of them were quite right, either not big enough or not pointing in the right direction as the milky way. As the night wore on, it seemed increasingly likely we would not find the right dune at all.
Then, perched high on the edge of a dune hundreds of feet tall, I found it. A narrow ridgeline rose from the desert floor and pointed directly toward the sky.
We spent the remainder of the night exposed to the wind and sand blowing relentlessly into our faces as we waited for the Milky Way to reach its position above the dune. At three in the morning, I captured the night sky. Thirty minutes later, during the first faint light of twilight, I photographed the dune from the exact same position.
To me this image represents a journey toward the heavens. The dune appears almost like a pathway ascending into the cosmos, a star gate connecting the ancient sands of Death Valley with the universe above.
