San Blas Islands, Panama, 2018
I made this photograph while stranded on a small island in the Panamanian Caribbean.
Earlier that day, we had been spearfishing along a remote outer reef when my ears began to feel slightly off. I didn’t think much of it until I climbed back into our small dinghy and was suddenly overcome with intense vertigo. Within minutes, I could barely stand. The world spun uncontrollably around me as I dry-heaved over the side of the boat.
With six of my friends still in the water and a bull shark keeping all of us on edge, it could not have come at a worse time. My friends left me ashore on a nearby island so I could recover on land. What began as a temporary solution turned into two days alone among swaying coconut palms, white sand, and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.
I spent two days alone on the island, sleeping beneath the trees, eating coconuts, and exploring its shores while waiting for my friends to return with the sailboat. Even after reaching land, the sensation never completely disappeared. The island felt as if it was rising and falling with the tide beneath my feet long after I had left the boat.
As storms drifted across the horizon, I picked up my camera and began panning across the sea. Rather than documenting the scene literally, I wanted to create an image that captured the feeling of the place. The motion, the color, the wind, and the strange dreamlike state I found myself in while alone on the island.
The result is Caribbean Blue, an impression of a remote corner of the Caribbean and one of the most unusual experiences of my travels.
