Marble, Colorado, 2018
Crystal Mill looks almost hidden in the autumn color. Its weathered wood sits above a rushing creek, with a waterfall dropping into a blue pool below. Golden aspens fill the hillside around it. I wanted to make a photograph that held onto that moment: the warm light, the sound of the water, and the feeling of finding this place tucked into the Colorado mountains.
Getting there was an adventure of its own. We drove a 4x4 over Schofield Pass from Crested Butte, descending through the narrow, rocky stretch known as the Devil’s Punchbowl. At one point, a rock stopped us beside a steep drop. We left the truck and hiked the remaining miles to the mill, where I made this photograph.
Our friend, who was supposed to be just behind us, never arrived. After dark, we hiked back up and found him high-centered on that same rock we couldn’t pass, his headlights on and his truck teetering beside the cliff. He had tried to cross it so he could catch up and drive us back. We spent hours moving rocks and helping him work the truck free late into the night, but it was certain the trucks fate would be tumbling down the cliff. When it finally came loose, it was on the wrong side of the pass from camp. We had to drive down the narrow and steep road to find a place to turn around, then climb back over that rock in the dark before we could head back toward Crested Butte.
I still remember the relief of reaching that campfire. But the part of the day I wanted to bring home was the mill: surrounded by gold, with alpine water rushing beneath it
