Mono Lake, California, 2025
As evening settled over Mono Lake, a band of wild horses grazed quietly across the open grasslands while storm clouds caught the last light of the day above the Sierra Nevada. For only a few moments, the fading sunlight illuminated the herd and the mountains beyond, creating a scene that felt uniquely Eastern Sierra.
Over the years, I have taken many people out to see the wild horses, but one trip stands out more than any other. Joining me that day was my longtime friend and mentor, ocean photographer Aaron Chang. We were in the Eastern Sierra for his first time seeing and photographing fall colors, and while horses were never part of the plan, I convinced him to spend an afternoon searching for them.
At first, he didn't quite understand my fascination and obsession. To him, the Sierra's autumn colors seemed far more worthy of our attention. That night, we caught an unforgettable glimpse of a herd stampeding beneath the moonlight. To my surprise, the next morning he asked if we could go again. So we went on a bigger adventure.
After several hours hiking into the basin, we finally located a herd near the shores of Mono Lake. As we watched the horses graze beneath golden evening light and the towering Sierra Nevada, I saw something change. The same person who had shown little interest before became completely captivated by them. By the end of the day, the horses were all he wanted to talk about.
I believe that's the magic of these creatures. There has always been something captivating about the wild horse. Their grace, beauty, strength, and spirit seem to resonate with people in a way few animals can. It is no wonder so many fall in love with them.
I've introduced many people to the wild horses of the Eastern Sierra, but few reactions have stayed with me like that one. This photograph reminds me of that day, the beauty of this remarkable herd, and the ability of wild places and wild animals to change the way we see the world.
