Grizzly 399 wasn’t just another wild bear. She was a legend—wise, resilient, and unshakably calm in a world that often gives wildlife little room to breathe. For nearly three decades, she raised generation after generation of cubs near roads and people, not out of recklessness but strategy. She instinctively used human presence as a shield from male bears that might harm her young, threading a fine line between wilderness and civilization with grace.
My connection with 399 wasn’t just through a lens—it was personal. Over years of photographing and observing her, I witnessed more than an animal surviving. I saw a matriarch thriving. A teacher. A symbol. Her behavior defied assumptions and demanded deeper respect for these intelligent, emotional beings. She didn’t just raise cubs; she raised awareness. She became a living ambassador for grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and her story shifted hearts far beyond the mountains she called home.
My art is a tribute to that story—a way of carrying her legacy forward. Grizzly 399’s life reminds us what’s at stake and why conservation matters—not in theory, but in faces, footsteps, and families that roam the forest. Her story isn’t over. It lives in the wild places she loved and in every person moved to protect them.

Dwarfed beneath Mt. Moran, one of the most prominent mountains of their home range, Grizzly 399 & her subadult quadruplets make their way across their favorite hunting grounds. Taken in the very last week before mom weaned her cubs off, it was my very last chances to capture their family portrait.
